That means he sounds just a little less passionate, and just a little less forceful than the girls. Artie's technique means he hits the notes so easily that they don't even sound particularly high. Part of the reason that Santana and Rachel's sound is so bright and impactful is that it really sounds like they're putting their all into it. His technique is so impressive and shines through heavily in this song, but in a strange way it might be what stops him shining the way Santana and Rachel do. His riffs are smooth, and he hits multiple A4s throughout the song with a lot of chest resonance like it's nothing. His little "ah's" at the end of lines retain that MJ feel, but he retains enough of his own brassy tone that it doesn't feel like an imitation. He had the male voice on the show to carry a Michael Jackson number, and pays impressive tribute. She's impressive the whole way through, and could have came first since her choruses with Rachel were so good, but Santana's moments outside that chorus stick with me a little more than Rachel's.Īrtie - This song wouldn't exist without Artie. She also hits a really strong riff on "You're out of time" whilst never falling out of tune with Artie, which really impressed me, and perfectly bridged into the second chorus, making it feel even bigger than the first. Her "terror takes the sound before you make it" harmony is really pretty, and contained enough that she doesn't spoil the build to the chorus. She has practically the only harmonies between lead vocalists on this song with Artie, and does a great job elevating his sections. We also hear a surprisingly soft vocal from Rachel (in that this isn't a particularly soft song) and it works beautifully. She's able to neutralize her vibrato well to maintain a pop feel on those chorus parts without losing that passionate performance to her voice. It's controlled without being constricted, and rings out beautifully on the track. Like I said, hers is the dominant voice on the chorus, and it's really fantastic work. She always sounds like she is performing her heart out, and it gives the song so much energy and vibrancy. Rachel - The theatricality of Rachel's voice adds so much to this song. The quality of sound is just fantastic, and her moments are always the ones that stick out in my mind. She really cleverly uses an "ah" sound instead of an "oh" sound on the highest note, which helps open up her voice and give a really clear, strong belt. What clinches Santana the victory however, is her "heads will roll, heads will roll" part she sings in the background a few times throughout the song. She's always had great vocal chemistry with Rachel, and while Rachel's voice is slightly overpowering, it's the power and passion of both their voices that makes the chorus so powerful. Her pop belt is a thing of beauty, and she utilises it to perfection here. Santana's voice isn't that audible over Rachel's, but we thankfully get a section over Finn's part of the song where it's just her singing a couple of the chorus lines, and she sounds amazing. She and Rachel's straight high belts on "off with your head" are so powerful, they make the Thriller section sound like a pre-chorus. Santana - Santana carries most of the "Heads Will Roll" sections of the songs, and they're undoubtedly the standouts of the song. Reminder that this ranking is based on this number alone, not anything else on or off the show. With four singers, it's once again tied for lowest number of vocalists, but as always, there's plenty to get into. It takes the best parts of both songs and uses them to make a phenomenal Halloween classic, and it's always a joy to listen to. Probably one of the most beloved Glee mashups, and numbers in general, of the whole show, and it's easy to see why.
